Brain Injuries

Brain injuries are defined as a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the function of the brain. Not all blows or jolts to the head result in traumatic brain injuries. The severity of such brain injuries may range from "mild," i.e., a brief change in mental status or consciousness to "severe," i.e., an extended period of unconsciousness or amnesia after the injury. A TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) can result in short or long-term problems with independent function.

Traumatic brain injuries
are more common than you may think!

  • Every 21 seconds, someone in the United States sustains a traumatic brain
       injury.

  • 1.5 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury every year.

Many of these injuries do not require a sty in the hospital, yet they result in impairments so profound, that lives are forever changed.

Traumatic brain injuries
can be caused by many things:

  • auto accidents (which account for over 50% of all traumatic brain injuries)
  • as well as falls,
  • blows to the head,
  • sport injuries,
  • etc;

Some symptoms of a brain injury:

  • Persistent headaches,
  • poor memory,
  • poor concentration,
  • poor organizational ability,
  • poor decision making,
  • slow speech,
  • slow reading,
  • confusion,
  • neck pain,
  • lack of energy,
  • change in sleep patterns,
  • loss of balance,
  • sensitivity to light,
  • blurred vision,
  • loss of senses,
  • ringing in the ears,
  • loss of sex drive,
  • and mood changes

If you suspect you or a loved one
has suffered a traumatic brain injury:

Get medical attention from a doctor (i.e. neurologist or neurosurgeon) who specializes in brain injuries. As with most other injuries, if you have been injured, you require medical treatment, but unlike many other traumas, in the case of brain damage, the longer the delay between the injury and the rehabilitation, the more difficult the problems are to treat with the risk that they might become permanent.
